Owen Says Family Matter
Chapter 63 · ~2.2k words
The family conference happens over encrypted video because Nico refuses any room Owen controls. Owen appears from what looks like a law office with art selected to suggest restraint and credibility. He does not look sleepless. That alone makes me want to throw the screen.
"Poppy is safe," he says immediately.
"Location," Nico answers.
"Not until we de-escalate the circus. Vivian took this too far. I agree. But if armed officers spook her, she becomes unpredictable."
Tessa steps into camera range. Owen's face changes in one clean crack. Not guilt. grief. fear. possession. Love and control have always worn the same coat on him. "You're really going to let the state mediate our family?" he asks her.
"You already let cash mediate it," she says.
He exhales, tired enough to sound sincere. "I kept you alive."
"You kept me manageable."
The argument could run for six years if we let it. Nico cuts in. "Mr. Hart, provide the child's location now or this becomes active custodial interference and conspiracy support."
Owen looks at me then, not the prosecutor. "Tell him to stop using criminal vocabulary for a family matter."
"It stopped being a family matter when you built scripts for our daughter."
He flinches. Small. real. "Vivian does not improvise under pressure. I didn't authorize that room."
"You financed every other room."
The silence that follows is answer enough. Finally he says, "If I give you the rural dock cameras from the lake night, you keep federal charges off my mother until Poppy is recovered."
Nico's expression goes flat. "You are negotiating around a child."
"I'm trying to stop my mother from becoming cornered."
Tessa laughs once, vicious and sad. "Cornered is what she does to other people."
Owen closes his eyes briefly. "Then start with the old orchard boathouse. Not the one by your house. The first one."
Before Nico can press further, the feed drops. Owen signed off before the trace could mature. Tessa turns to me slowly. "First one," she says. "The pre-renovation dock house on Mercer family's north shore. That's where I told Nina to meet me the night everything broke."
