Offshore Payments

Chapter 66 · ~1.9k words

The shell is called Brighthollow Civic Solutions, which is exactly the kind of name people choose when they want corruption to sound like a conference. Nico maps the flow on the hood of an SUV while dawn burns up over the water: donor family crisis payment in, Harbor House fee out, offshore transfer through Nassau, back into a domestic PAC vendor cluster, then into Stillwater Strategies and two lobbying retainers tied to Owen's pre-campaign build.

"They turned private shame into political capital," I say.

"Yes," Nico answers. "And they did it with enough layers to claim charity at the front and compliance at the back."

Tessa studies the printout. "Vivian always said reputations are assets if you warehouse them correctly."

There it is: motive grown bigger than one grave. Harbor House was not just about control, or even money alone. It was a conversion engine. Hide the donor scandal, collect the donor loyalty, move the donor money into the Hart future. The wrong grave was part mercy theater, part insurance policy, part infrastructure.

Nico circles three names on the route chain. A bishop. a hospital board chair. a state senator's brother. "These are not sleepy-town problems anymore."

"They never were," Callum says, taking photos of the board. "Greybridge just gave them a local accent."

My phone buzzes with a voice message from Leah. Weak. breathless. "If you're getting this, I had to move again. They took the pages I memorized but not the tune. Nina made me learn the donor sequence as piano intervals in case paper died. C-sharp, A, F..." The message ends in a scuffle and dead air.

Tessa grabs my arm. "Piano scales. That's why Nina kept writing drawer order in musical shorthand."

Which means the full donor list may be memorized somewhere outside the burned rooms and half-saved drives. If Leah is alive, the system is still killable. If she isn't, the music may be all that's left.
