Owen's live statement is the most dangerous kind: not fully false. He admits Harbor House used confidentiality arrangements with donor families. He calls it misguided harm reduction. He admits he received contact from Tessa after the crash. He calls it extortion he tolerated to protect Poppy from another loss. He admits Roman "handled matters too aggressively." He frames everything else as a campaign against family privacy by people exploiting damaged women.

Damaged women. There it is, the umbrella term under which half the state's crimes apparently hope to stay dry.

Then he offers the counterstory meant for suburban kitchens and cable-news brains alike: "Whatever mistakes adults made, my daughter deserves one stable parent who did not run."

The line is sharp because it is aimed precisely where Tessa cannot answer cleanly. Tessa hears it and goes so still I can feel the violence she doesn't commit. Mia mutters, "There. That's the room voice."

Nico kills the sound halfway through, but the damage is already airborne. The statement won't save Owen in court. It may, however, save him in enough living rooms to complicate everything. He is recasting himself as the only adult who stayed physically present, betting people will value proximity over ethics if the child is photogenic enough.

"We need Poppy choosing her own words publicly," I say before I can think better of it.

Tessa turns on me. "No. We need Poppy nowhere near a camera until she can be a child again."

She's right. I hate that she is. Owen has been using the same false choice on all of us: either keep the child hidden under adult lies or put the child in front of adult judgment. Refusing both will take something smarter than outrage.

My phone buzzes with a message from Poppy's secure tablet. No text. Just one selfie. She is in the greenhouse behind Hart House, face blotchy from crying, and behind her on the bench is Tessa's old gardening apron.

She added one caption: Can I meet her without the TV version?
