The Death Certificate
Chapter 2 · ~2.1k words

Dana Holt slid a paper across the glass table. Elise did not touch it at first. Her name sat in bold type above words that belonged to strangers: deceased, verified, claimant notified.
"This is wrong," Elise said.
"Yes," Theo said.
Martin looked at him. "You do not know that."
"I know she is breathing."
"A person can breathe and still be committing fraud," Martin said.
Claire whispered, "Martin."
Elise picked up the paper. The date of death was that morning. The place was St. Agnes Hospice Center. Cause pending. Verifying nurse: Lenora Pike. The beneficiary section named the Hart Vale Foundation as contingent receiver if Elise Hart predeceased Vivian's trust activation period.
Her hand went cold around the page.
"Predeceased?" Elise said. "Vivian died last week."
Dana nodded. "Your mother's amended trust includes a thirty-day survival clause. If you are alive and legally competent, you receive controlling interest in HartLine. If not, control moves to the foundation."
Martin spread his hands. "None of us wrote that clause."
"Vivian did," Elise said.
"Vivian wrote many things while angry."
Adam gave a weak smile. "Mom treated affection like a tax audit."
No one smiled back.
Theo pulled another document from his folder. "The bank freeze was automatic because the death claim touched three linked accounts. Checking, brokerage, and the trust escrow."
"My checking account?" Elise asked.
"Frozen."
She thought of rent, gas, her overdue phone bill, the divorce lawyer still sending invoices. Vivian had left her one last test and someone had turned it into a coffin.
"Who filed it?" Elise asked.
Dana looked at Martin.
Martin looked at Elise with the pity he used when cameras were near.
"The initial claimant was Meridian Mutual," he said. "Your employer."
Elise's mouth dried. She investigated fraudulent claims for Meridian. Her own name had just moved through the system like a body.
Claire covered her lips. Adam's phone buzzed and he killed the screen too fast.
Theo noticed. So did Elise.
"Read the will," Elise said.
Dana shut the folder. "Legally, I cannot. Not until we know whether you are Elise Hart."
