Ruby Answers

Chapter 32 · ~1.8k words

Ruby did not answer at first.

She sat in the station break room with a blanket around her shoulders, staring at a vending machine as if it held judgment. Elise showed her the text from Vivian's old number. Ruby read it once and started shaking.

"No," she said.

Claire stood behind Elise. June had been kept outside by Roslyn and Maribel, which meant every adult in the room had one last chance to be honest before a child heard it.

"Ruby," Elise said, "is June yours?"

Ruby's eyes filled. "She was born Lily."

Claire made a sound Elise would remember for the rest of her life.

Ruby pressed both hands to her mouth, then forced them down. "I was sixteen. My mother was gone. Vivian found me through a school counselor. She said she knew a good family who could give the baby everything."

Claire whispered, "Vivian told me the mother was an adult who wanted no contact."

"Vivian told me I could see photos every year," Ruby said. "I got three. Then nothing."

"Why did you not come?" Claire asked.

Ruby laughed through tears. "To HartLine? To Vivian Hart? I was poor, scared, and stupid enough to believe rich people kept files better than promises."

Elise felt Vivian's reach in the room, cold and precise. Vivian had not only used Ruby in the current trap. She had taken her child years before, then built a case around that wound.

Claire covered her face. "June is mine."

"Yes," Ruby said. "I know."

That mercy nearly broke Claire.

Roslyn opened the door. "June heard enough through the wall to know we lied by omission."

June stood behind her, white-faced.

Ruby stood too fast. "I'm sorry."

June looked at Claire, then Ruby, then Elise.

"Did Grandma buy me?" she asked.

No one could answer cleanly.

Martin could. From the hallway, he said, "Vivian saved you."

June turned toward him.

"From whom?" she asked.
