Restitution Is Not Inheritance
Chapter 49 · ~1.9k words
Elise knew Vivian's first passphrase because Vivian had aimed it at her work.
The second had to be aimed somewhere more private.
The laptop waited. Theo looked at her as if the right sentence might be hidden in her face. Roslyn kept Mara cuffed but watched Elise too. Everyone expected Vivian's dead hand to open.
Elise closed her eyes.
Vivian did not trust birthdays. Too common. She did not trust favorite songs. Too soft. She trusted damage. Dates when people stopped pretending.
The day Elise stopped trying to please her had opened the safe.
What day had Vivian stopped pretending?
Claire stepped out of the elevator with June behind her. Roslyn cursed. Claire ignored her.
"Try Lily," June said.
Mara flinched.
Elise turned. "What?"
June's voice shook. "Grandma changed things when she felt guilty. If she made this account after Ruby, she would use the name she took."
The laptop timed down from thirty seconds.
Elise spoke into the headset. "Lily Bell."
The screen flashed red.
Incorrect.
June's face fell.
Claire whispered, "Try June."
Elise did. Incorrect.
Twenty seconds.
Theo said, "Vivian would not use a name. She would use a sentence."
Elise stared at the locked screen. Vivian's unsent message burned in her memory: I should have loved you before I needed you.
No. That was for Elise.
Vivian's note in June's account had said restitution, not inheritance.
Elise spoke the words.
"Restitution is not inheritance."
The screen went blue.
Account locked under fraud protocol. Manual release requires court order.
Theo sagged against the desk. June began to cry. Claire held her and this time June did not pull away.
Mara's smile vanished. "Martin will know it failed."
Roslyn hauled her upright. "Good."
Elise looked at the frozen account. Vivian had not left her money first. She had left her a lock.
Outside, sirens rose from the street below.
But Martin was not coming up.
He was leaving through the foundation garage.
