The Vault
Chapter 57 · ~1.8k words
Mara did not go to Westport Bank to steal money.
She went to open a safe deposit box.
By the time Elise, Theo, and Roslyn reached the downtown branch, every light was on and every employee looked like they wished they had chosen dentistry. Mara stood inside the vault room with a bank manager, a bandaged hand, and a court-certified notary stamp held up like a weapon.
"She says she has authority from Vivian Hart," the manager said.
Theo stared at him. "Vivian Hart is dead."
"The authorization predates death."
"So do many crimes."
Mara smiled from behind the vault threshold. "Hello, Theo. Fired yet?"
Elise stepped forward. "Where is the binder?"
"Safe."
"That is not an answer."
"It is if you know how banks work."
Roslyn held up her badge. "Mara Kline, you are under arrest."
Mara lifted a dead-man switch in her unbandaged hand. It was small, black, and ugly. "If I release this, the files go to every address in Martin's emergency list. Donors, lawyers, press, clients. Including the version where Elise looks like the architect."
Elise believed she would do it. Mara had spent years turning signatures into exits. Now she had built one out of exposure.
"What do you want?" Elise asked.
"Protection. Money. A written deal that I testify and do not disappear into Martin's jail cell."
Roslyn's voice stayed level. "You cut Ruby and stole evidence."
"I also kept evidence. Pick which fact matters tonight."
Theo moved slightly behind Elise, scanning the vault keypad. He knew this branch. He knew its habits.
Mara looked at him. "Do not try it."
June's voice came from the lobby behind them. "Try what?"
Claire hissed, "June."
Mara's eyes flicked toward the girl.
Theo used that half-second to hit the vault emergency hold.
The steel door began to close with Mara inside.
She released the switch.
