Martin stopped performing after the final recording.
He did not confess. Men like Martin treated confession as a service other people owed them. But he stopped smiling at cameras, stopped correcting prosecutors' wording, and stopped calling Vivian his late wife.
Greer broke next.
His lawyers tried to trade him for the whole settlement map before prosecutors pointed out that Greer had hidden murder evidence in a church and financed the death claim. The phrase did not look good in a motion.
Mara got a deal no one liked and everyone needed. Paul Danner got a smaller one. Dane Lott got none until he remembered who ordered the van burned with Lenora inside.
Lenora's grandsons came to the station with their mother. Elise met them in the lobby because hiding from them felt like cowardice borrowed from better-dressed people.
"She tried to leave a note," Elise said.
The older boy asked, "Did it help?"
Elise swallowed. "Yes."
It was not enough. It was true.
At HartLine, the receiver opened Vivian's personal policy under court supervision. The twelve million stayed in Restitution Account Number 28. Elise signed nothing except an acknowledgment that she would not receive a contingent payout.
Nadine Park looked pleased. "That was easy."
"It was one signature."
"In this family, that is a miracle."
June laughed from the next table, where Ruby and Claire were fighting gently over whether to list Lily Bell in the account history as birth name or historical name.
"Both," June said. "I am tired of people deleting names."
Elise wrote that into the policy table.
Theo returned from a meeting with Westport Bank's board. "They offered reinstatement."
"Are you taking it?"
"No."
"Because of me?"
"Because I watched a bank call a living woman dead and then ask how to limit exposure. I am done polishing systems that need witnesses."
Elise looked at the claim table between them.
"We may need someone who understands systems."
"Then hire me badly," he said.
For the first time all week, she smiled without pain.
