Evan Visits at Night

Chapter 44 · ~1.9k words

Evan Rusk came to Nora's house at dusk with a bouquet and two security guards.

The flowers were not lilies. That almost made it worse.

Nora opened the door with Ruiz on speaker and Sophie's baseball bat behind her back. Miles had bought it for a spring league Sophie quit after one practice. Nora had mocked him for keeping it. She was done mocking kept objects.

"Nora," Evan said. "We need a calmer conversation."

"The detective is listening."

His eyes shifted to the phone. "Good. Then she can hear me offer administrative leave, continued health coverage, and legal support while we review the forged forms."

The offer was beautiful.

Nora distrusted it on sight.

"In exchange for what?" Ruiz asked through the speaker.

Evan smiled at the phone. "Cooperation."

"Define it."

"Return of proprietary Kind Harbor documents. A written statement that Mrs. Vale discovered irregular forms after accessing patient files outside her normal duties. No media contact. No further unsupervised patient-family outreach."

Nora could feel the trap closing. Administrative leave sounded like mercy until it became confession.

"You want me to say I accessed files first."

"You did access files."

"After you forged me into them."

One of the guards looked at Evan. Not much. Enough.

Evan lowered his voice. "You have a child with medication needs. You have a mortgage. You have a pending fraud review. Take the boring solution."

Insurance was boring on purpose. Miles had taught Sophie that. Evan used the same word because the whole machine spoke one language.

Nora lifted the bat into view.

"Get off my porch."

Evan's smile died. "Judith said you were impulsive."

"Judith says many things through men."

Ruiz's voice cut in. "Mr. Rusk, leave now."

He left the flowers on the porch.

After the cars pulled away, Nora looked inside the bouquet. Tucked between stems was a folded copy of Sophie's coverage termination notice, effective in ten days.
