The Memorial Speech

Chapter 49 · ~1.9k words

Judith gave the memorial speech on a Thursday evening because weekday grief attracted donors who liked to feel busy and kind.

Miles's portrait stood on an easel beside the podium. It was the wrong photograph, Nora thought when she saw the livestream link Tessa sent her. Too smooth. Too obedient. Miles without pancake batter on his shirt, without worry in his eyes, without the secret life that had swallowed them all.

Judith wore black silk and white lilies.

"My son believed in protecting vulnerable families," she said.

Nora watched from her kitchen table with Sophie asleep upstairs and Brooke on speaker. The comments filled with hearts.

"He understood that grief can make people susceptible to destructive influences."

There it was.

"Tonight, our foundation announces the Miles Vale Continuity Fund, dedicated to supporting children whose families face insurance delays, legal uncertainty, and unstable caregiving."

Nora's hands went cold.

Brooke said, "She is packaging Sophie."

Onscreen, Judith lowered her head. "I ask privacy for my granddaughter as adults around her choose whether to prolong conflict or accept help."

The comments changed. Prayers for Sophie. Hearts for Judith. One woman wrote, Sometimes mothers need intervention.

Nora shut the laptop.

Her phone rang immediately. Unknown number.

She answered because the night had taught her that avoidance did not prevent harm.

"Mrs. Vale?" a woman's voice whispered. "My name is Elaine Havelock. I got away from Cal. I have my husband's papers."

Nora stood.

"Where are you?"

"The old library parking lot. I think someone followed me."

Brooke was already moving on the speaker. "Tell her to stay in the car."

Nora repeated it.

Elaine began to cry. "The foundation kept three hundred thousand dollars. Judith told me Martin wanted it that way."

Behind Elaine's voice came a tapping sound.

Someone knocking on glass.

Elaine whispered, "It's Cal."
