The Quiet Clause

Chapter 74 · ~1.9k words

The quiet clause had a second version.

Cal sent it at 3:03 a.m. to Nora, Brooke, and, accidentally or not, Marcy. It was older, harsher, and labeled template HART-QC.

Marcy called it "the hush menu."

The template allowed foundation-linked settlements to restore benefits, release reserves, or provide family grants in exchange for non-disparagement, claim withdrawal, and consent not to contest care directives after death.

Nora read the clause that made her hands go cold.

Signer agrees not to challenge clinical acceleration decisions made in good faith under comfort-care advisement.

Clinical acceleration.

"Mercy killing language without saying killing," Brooke said.

Ruiz photographed the template. "This goes to the prosecutor now."

"Will it be enough?" Nora asked.

"Enough to make them wish it wasn't."

Brooke looked at the email header. "Cal sent from a Greyhaven relay."

"Does that mean he is still there?"

"Or wants us to think so."

Nora typed a reply: Where is Lila?

This time Cal answered.

Alive if she stays hidden. Dead if she testifies unprotected. Judith has Owen.

Brooke leaned over Nora's shoulder. "Ask what he wants."

Nora typed.

Cal's response took four minutes.

A hearing where I can answer only what I am asked.

Ruiz cursed softly. "He wants immunity without saying immunity."

Marcy's voice crackled through the speaker. "Lawyers are very dramatic for people who bill in tenths."

Nora looked at the quiet clause again.

"If we ask the right question at the hearing, can he answer on record before Judith stops him?"

Brooke nodded slowly.

"Yes. But the question has to fit the claim scope they set."

Nora looked at the denial letter that started everything.

"Then we ask who had authority to make Miles dead the first time."

The sentence did not sound brave. It sounded administrative, which made it perfect. Judith had hidden inside administration for years. Nora would knock with the same language.
