Nora's Counterclaim

Chapter 77 · ~1.9k words

Nora filed a counterclaim because Adair told her anger needed a filing cabinet.

It alleged that Harbor Union's denial relied on a prior death settlement the company could not authenticate without exposing forged spouse status, unauthorized foundation access, and post-death system activity by a deceased employee account. It demanded full comparison of both death records and all related beneficiary assignments.

Nora liked none of the words. She signed anyway.

Harbor Union responded in forty minutes.

Petra called the counterclaim inflammatory, procedurally improper, and outside scope. That meant it had hurt.

Judith called Nora directly.

Brooke shook her head when the phone rang. Ruiz said record. Nora answered.

"Nora," Judith said, "I am tired."

It was a new tactic. No sweetness. No threat first. Just an old woman's fatigue laid on the line like a body.

"So am I."

"Then stop."

"No."

Judith exhaled. "You think this is courage because poor women are taught that suffering with witnesses becomes justice. It does not. It becomes more suffering."

Nora looked at Sophie, who sat at the table doing math homework badly on purpose so she could keep listening.

"Why did you choose me before Miles met me?"

Silence.

For the first time, Nora had asked a question Judith did not expect from this angle.

"Miles chose you," Judith said.

"After you put me on a list."

"Every foundation evaluates need."

"Need for what?"

Judith's voice cooled. "A woman with a sick child, debt, no family, and an honest face can make many things look believable."

Nora's hand tightened around the phone.

"Thank you," she said.

"For what?"

Brooke pointed at the recorder.

Nora ended the call.

For once, Judith had given them a sentence she could not dress as charity.

Nora saved the recording twice, then once more to Sophie's homework drive. The habit of duplication had become its own kind of prayer.
