The Board Minutes

The board minutes arrived from Elaine twenty minutes before the hearing.

They came as photographs taken badly inside a coat closet. Elaine had found the old binder in Judith's guest room while pretending to retrieve a sympathy scarf. Fear had made her slow for years. Guilt made her efficient.

Brooke printed the pages in Adair's car outside Harbor Union's regional conference center.

"Do we have time to use these?" Nora asked.

Adair read the first page and made a sound like a knife being sharpened.

"We make time."

The minutes were from nine years earlier, before the foundation had its current name. Hart Continuity Services. Discussion item: family liaison integration with legacy insurers. Goal: reduce post-death contest friction. Strategy: grief-based pre-consent.

Nora wanted to hit something.

"Grief-based pre-consent," she said.

Brooke read the attendee list. Judith Hart. Evan Rusk. Cal Reed, junior counsel. Celia Brand, Harbor Union systems.

There it was. The table before the bodies.

Ruiz, who was attending as observer, photographed the pages. "These may not enter the hearing if they block collateral documents."

Adair put them in a folder. "Then they enter through authentication. If they claim Hart was only an alias or old language, we ask why current claim files still use it."

Nora nodded as if she understood every move. She did not. But she understood the target. Make the true thing say itself.

Inside the building lobby, Judith arrived to a cluster of cameras. She did not speak. She only pressed a hand to Miles's portrait pin on her lapel.

People moved for her.

Nora entered through the same door with Brooke on one side and Tessa on the other. Daniel could not come, but he had sent pudding in a plastic bag with evidence of morale written on it.

Judith saw Nora and smiled sadly.

Nora did not smile back.

For once, the room did not know which widow to watch.
