The Second Death Certificate
Chapter 85 · ~1.9k words
The second death certificate came from Harbor Union because Nora asked the boring question.
"Who authenticated Miles Vale's death for the current claim before my claim form was received?"
Petra objected to the premise. Lowell overruled her because the denial letter itself referenced prior and current death status. A junior analyst, pale and terrified, opened the document log.
"Current death certificate was received electronically from Briar Glen Vital Records," he said.
Adair asked, "Timestamp?"
"Two days after date of death."
"Claim filed?"
"Four days after date of death."
"Who requested it?"
The analyst looked at Petra.
Lowell said, "Answer."
"Celia Brand."
A dead employee had requested Miles's death certificate before Nora filed.
Brooke felt the room understand at different speeds. Petra understood first and tried to close the laptop. Lowell told the analyst not to move. Evan understood and began sweating. Judith understood and became very still.
Nora's hands were flat on the table.
"Celia Brand is dead," she said.
The analyst nodded.
"Who used her account?" Adair asked.
Petra objected again, weaker.
Lowell looked tired of narrowness. "If the account triggered a document used in the denial, it is relevant."
The analyst pulled the login report.
IP address: Cal Reed's office.
Device ID: CR-LAW-03.
Cal closed his eyes.
Adair turned. "Mr. Reed, did you use Celia Brand's credentials?"
Cal took a slow breath.
"Yes."
Judith whispered, "Cal."
He finally looked at her.
"You put me there."
Petra stood. "This proceeding is being abused."
Lowell's voice cut through the room. "No, Ms. Voss. It appears the records were."
Nora looked at the second death certificate on the screen.
For the first time, the paper looked less powerful than the people reading it aloud.
Nora had spent weeks afraid of documents. Now she saw the trick: paper terrified people only while the wrong person held it quietly.
