Judith's Offer

Chapter 88 · ~2.0k words

Judith offered Nora a trade in the parking garage.

Not alone, because Nora had stopped obeying villain instructions and because Brooke had slipped a live phone into Nora's coat pocket before Nora left the hallway. Ruiz listened from the stairwell above with two officers held back until Judith said something worth preserving.

Judith stood beside Cal's car. Cal sat in the driver's seat, conscious, pale, and bleeding from a cut at his temple. Owen Pike stood behind him with one hand inside his jacket.

"This is melodramatic," Nora said, because fear needed somewhere to go.

Judith looked disappointed. "You have developed a taste for performance."

"You taught the town the form."

Cal laughed weakly. Owen hit the roof of the car with his palm.

Judith held up a folder. "Original Miles hearing request. Original Sophie trust amendment. Original Celia access authorization. Take them. Leave with Cal. Say today's hearing confused preliminary matters with grief-driven accusations."

"And you?"

"I retire. Quietly. The foundation restructures. Your coverage returns. Your house remains yours."

Nora looked at Cal. "You sent me files because she was framing you."

He swallowed. "Yes."

"Did you help kill Miles?"

Judith's eyes sharpened.

Cal closed his eyes. "I helped isolate him legally. I did not know about the road hazard until after."

Owen shifted.

Ruiz would have that.

Judith knew it too. Her face changed, not enough for Owen, enough for Nora.

"You are not a good mother," Nora said.

Judith flinched harder than she had at fraud.

"I protected what weak people squander."

"You killed your son because he tried to stop you."

Owen reached for Nora.

Ruiz shouted from the stairwell. Officers flooded the level.

Judith did not run. She adjusted her coat and said, "Nora attacked me again."

This time, three phones were recording.

Judith saw the lenses and understood that the old room had failed her. There was no soft corner left where threat could call itself care.
