The Claim Room
Chapter 90 · ~1.9k words
The claim room was full when the hearing resumed.
Not officially full. Officially, only required parties attended. Unofficially, every hallway outside held reporters, families, staff, and donors pretending not to hover. Briar Glen had spent years whispering in private rooms. Now the walls were too thin.
Lowell called the session back to order with a voice that had lost patience and gained purpose.
Adair submitted the original first death authentication.
Petra objected so quickly the words tangled.
Lowell accepted the document for preliminary authentication because Harbor Union's own denial relied on the prior death settlement. The company had built the door. Nora had walked through it carrying a key.
Brooke watched Petra's face and saw calculation become damage control.
Nora watched Judith's empty chair.
Judith had been detained but not formally charged for Miles's death yet. Her absence said more than her presence could have. For the first time, the mother of grief had lost control of the room that grief built.
Cal returned under police escort, with a bandage at his temple and no polished expression left.
Adair asked him the first short question.
"Who authorized Celia Brand's post-death account use?"
Cal looked at the table, then at Nora.
"Judith Hart Vale."
"For which claims?"
"Hart Continuity assignments, Lila Hart payout, Miles Vale first death, Miles Vale second death, Sophie Vale trust, and Nora Vale claim denial path."
Nora felt the sentence land in the room like a structure collapsing.
Petra whispered to her co-counsel. Evan stared at his hands. Kells closed his eyes. Lila cried silently.
Lowell asked one question himself.
"Was Nora Vale's current claim denied because of records created or altered through this same authority path?"
Cal answered, "Yes."
Nora's denial letter sat on the table.
It no longer looked like a verdict.
It looked like the first loose thread.
