Nora's Choice

Nora's choice arrived three weeks later in an envelope that looked kinder than the first one.

Harbor Union acknowledged material compromise in the denial path. The current claim could proceed, subject to amended beneficiary review. Sophie's coverage was restored retroactively. The mortgage hardship grant remained available without confidentiality restrictions, funded now from a regulator-supervised restitution pool rather than the Vale Foundation.

There was money on the table again.

Clean money, Brooke said, or cleaner. Restitution had its own shadows, but it did not require Nora to call Miles paranoid or Judith merciful.

Nora took two days.

On the first, she paid for Sophie's medicine and bought groceries without calculating which bill would bleed. On the second, she sat in Miles's closet and opened every box she had avoided.

She found ordinary things. Socks. A cracked phone charger. Birthday candles. A receipt from the pharmacy where he met her and, on the back, a note in his handwriting.

Warning her is not enough. Ask if she needs help with the kid's prescription. Do not be weird.

Nora sat on the floor and laughed until she cried.

He had approached because Judith put Nora on a list. He had stayed because Sophie could not breathe and Nora had yelled at a pharmacist and Miles had apparently written himself instructions not to be weird.

Both could be true.

She accepted the claim payment after Adair carved out an independent trust for Sophie and a litigation hold for all connected records. Nora did not pretend money healed anything. Money kept the heat on, medicine filled, and Judith's lawyers from making poverty into proof.

At the bank, the manager said, "Mrs. Vale, I'm sorry for everything."

Nora signed the final form.

"Put that in writing," she said.

He did.

That evening, Nora took Sophie for pancakes at dinner.

"Dinosaur shapes?" Sophie asked.

"Obviously."

They were terrible dinosaurs.

They ate them anyway.
