The Choir Stair

Sadie would not let the health officer close the county sedan door until Rowan climbed halfway in and took both her hands. The girl kept shaking in short hard bursts, as if Bellwether's calm voices were still hitting her from inside the dead silver van behind them.

"They're going to come back with a nicer woman," Sadie said. "Or somebody from church."

"Not alone they won't," Mara said.

The health officer looked tired enough to tell the truth. "I can freeze that transfer. I cannot leave a minor in a parking lot while every lawyer in this county starts calling me back."

Beth Hensley stepped in. Her yellow raincoat was still streaked with curb grit. "Use my name," she said. "Mrs. Pruitt can say it on video. Sadie stays with me until state puts a real advocate in the room. We do this noisy."

The offer cost her. Cora's name had not left Beth's face since the clipboard opened. Taking Sadie now meant choosing, in public, which daughter Bellwether would punish first.

Rowan put Mrs. Pruitt on speaker. From Tess's hidden basement, Sadie's mother said, "Beth, if you keep my girl where people can see her, yes. Sadie, go with the mother who stood up."

Sadie nodded through one broken breath. The health officer filmed the handoff: Beth saying her full name, Sadie saying she was going willingly, Mrs. Pruitt giving consent from the phone. Mara watched every second because Bellwether would lie about this too if they left even an inch unrecorded.

Then Rowan's hidden phone buzzed against Sadie's wrist.

"It's her," Rowan said. "Count started. East choir stair. Don't come front."

Naomi's voice came through the speaker line from Tess's newsroom. "Old St. Luke's fundraiser brochure says the east choir stair runs from the side lot to the robe loft over the gym. If Bellwether is counting protected-side girls there, they moved the panic off campus fast."

Mara looked at Beth. "Can you keep Sadie visible?"

"Twenty-four-hour diner beside urgent care," Beth said at once. "Glass walls. Parking lot cameras. If they want her, they can ask in front of pie and night nurses." She took Sadie's hand. "And if they want Cora because I did this, get to St. Luke's before they teach her what public courage costs."

That was the real handoff. Not just girl to mother. Witness line to witness line. Mara watched Beth lead Sadie toward the sedan, then ran for Tess's van with Rowan and Beatrice.

St. Luke's sat six minutes away on a hill above dark florist shops. The east lot was full of polished SUVs and a parish shuttle bus left idling. Through the side windows Mara saw cream choir robes, navy cardigans, and Bellwether mothers smiling too carefully for an ordinary church night.

Beatrice ducked lower in her seat. "They use the robe loft during donor concerts," she said. "Girls wait there before processions."

"Front doors are suicide," Naomi said. "Kitchen delivery entrance on the east side should open into the service corridor."

Mara killed the lights before the last turn. They slipped behind dumpsters, hugged the wet wall, and found the delivery door propped with a rubber wedge. Somebody had been moving trays in a hurry.

Inside, the church smelled of floor polish and wet wool. Organ notes leaked through the ceiling. Mara followed Beatrice past stacked banquet chairs and paper-cup racks until the corridor bent toward a narrow stairwell marked CHOIR / EAST.

Voices floated down from above.

"Again," a woman said. "No one at Pine Hollow touched you. No one at Lower Alder spoke to you. Your mothers are managing an ugly rumor."

A girl's voice answered, flat with fear. "No one at Pine Hollow touched me. No one at Lower Alder spoke to me."

Another mother said, "And if anyone asks why you're here tonight?"

"Supplemental choir supper," several girls answered together.

Rowan went rigid beside Mara. The count was not just a count. It was a correction.

They climbed until Mara could see through the iron rails into the loft. Twelve girls stood in two rows under fluorescent lights, hymn folders pressed to their ribs. Two donor mothers moved down the line reading names from a yellow pad and touching shoulders into place. At the far end, a third woman opened each folder and checked inside as if searching for contraband.

Rowan's phone gave one short buzz. On the landing above them, a girl in a cream robe paused without turning her head. One black ribbon had slipped loose from her braid. She shifted the hymn folders in her arms, and a folded page slid into view.

"Don't look straight at her," Beatrice whispered.

The girl descended two steps as if obeying somebody below. At the rail gap she let the folded page fall between the balusters. Rowan caught it against her coat. The girl kept moving, face blank, and took her place in line again.

One of the donor mothers snapped her head up. "Why are we hearing stairs?"

Beatrice moved first. She stepped onto the landing with the bored irritation of a rich girl interrupted. "Because the pantry door downstairs is open and your choir girls aren't the only people with legs, Mrs. Vale."

The woman froze. She knew Beatrice, and she knew better than to stage a donor-family fight in front of frightened daughters.

"Your mother is looking for the navy folders," Beatrice said. "Unless you want Celeste asking why you're still rehearsing lines instead of cleaning them up."

That landed. Mrs. Vale turned toward the supply closet just as footsteps crossed the upper hall. "Turn," she hissed at the girls.

"Go," Beatrice breathed.

Mara and Rowan slipped into the room beside the stair. It had once been a music office. A white baby grand sat under a sheet. Choir robes hung from rolling racks like waiting bodies.

Rowan opened the folded page. It was a count sheet: twelve protected-side girls listed by surname and homeroom. Two columns beside the names read after Pine Hollow and after Lower Alder. Three names were marked twice in red. At the bottom, in cramped handwriting, someone had added: Cora Hensley moved 7:40 - white piano room - family supper.

Something thudded behind the robe rack.

Mara reached in and found a second phone wrapped in a choir sash.

On the screen waited a seven-second video. Cora sat on the floor of this same white-piano room without the sheet over the instrument. Another Pine Hollow girl was beside her, both clutching paper cups. Off camera, a soft adult voice said, "Your mothers made this public, so now we do the calming here." Cora looked toward whoever was filming, and fear blew through the practiced stillness on her face.

The video ended. A text appeared from the hidden number before Rowan could speak.

I bought ten minutes. They think it was one of us from the Lower Alder stop. Take Cora before family supper starts. If I miss count again, they lock the stair.
