The Temptation

Chapter 68 · ~4.1k words

The ultimatum hung in the sterile air of the hospital room, heavier than the locks on the door. *Or Maya comes home.*

Iris stared at the phone screen, now dark. The social worker had taken it back, her heels clicking a retreat down the hallway. Iris was alone again.

She sank onto the edge of the bed. Her hands were shaking so violently she had to clasp them together in her lap.

He had thought of everything. The fire wasn't just about destroying evidence; it was about destroying credibility. It was about creating a narrative where Iris was the villain, the unstable arsonist who endangered the family legacy. And now, he was using her daughter as the final piece of the trap.

Six months.

Six months in a private facility. No phone. No visitors. No lawyers.

And in exchange, Maya got a future. A clean slate. A life free from the suffocating weight of debt that Iris had carried for twenty years.

It was a good deal.

It was a mother’s deal.

Iris closed her eyes. She imagined Maya in her white coat, walking across the stage at graduation. She imagined the look of relief on her face when the tuition bill vanished.

She could do it. She could disappear for six months. She could let Elias rot in the Carriage House. She could let Julian win.

For Maya.

The door opened. A nurse entered with a paper cup of water and a small, white pill.

"For the anxiety," she said, her voice flat.

Iris looked at the pill. It was the same shape, the same color as the ones Mrs. Gable had given Elias.

"I don't need it," Iris said.

"Doctor's orders."

Iris took the cup. She put the pill in her mouth, pretended to swallow, and hid it under her tongue. The nurse watched her throat move, then nodded and left.

Iris spit the pill into the toilet and flushed it.

She wasn't going to be sedated. She needed to think.

She paced the small room, her ankle throbbing. There had to be another way.

But her bank account was empty. Her reputation was ash. Marcus was... where was Marcus?

He hadn't been arrested. The police officer had let him go. But he couldn't help her if she was locked up. And he couldn't fight Julian's lawyers with a contractor's salary.

She was checkmated.

Unless...

Unless she took the deal, but on her own terms.

She went to the door. She banged on it.

"I need to speak to the doctor!" she yelled. "I'm ready to sign!"

An hour later, Julian's lawyer arrived. Lawrence Sterling. The name from the wall. *L. Sterling.*

He was a small man with a sharp face and an expensive suit that didn't quite fit. He laid the papers on the small table.

"Standard agreement," he said, uncapping a fountain pen. "Admission of liability for the fire. Voluntary commitment to St. Jude’s. Transfer of executor duties."

Iris picked up the pen. She looked at the signature line.

"Where is the check?" she asked.

"Excuse me?"

"The check for the university. Julian said he would pay it today."

Sterling smiled tightly. "Mr. Vance is a man of his word. The transfer will be initiated once the papers are filed."

"No," Iris said. "I want to see the confirmation number. Now."

Sterling sighed. He pulled out his phone, tapped a few keys, and turned the screen to her.

A pending wire transfer. $45,000. To the university bursar.

It was real.

Iris looked at the papers. She looked at the transfer.

She signed.

Sterling took the papers. He tapped his phone. "Done."

"When do I leave?" Iris asked.

"The transport is on its way. St. Jude’s is... very comfortable."

He left.

Iris sat back on the bed. She felt hollowed out. Defeated. But Maya was safe.

She looked out the small, barred window. It faced the parking lot.

A delivery van pulled up. *Sal's Pizza.*

Iris frowned.

Then she saw a car pull up behind it. A silver Lexus.

Sabrina got out.

She wasn't visiting Iris. She wasn't meeting Julian.

She walked to the delivery van. She took two large boxes.

And then she got back in her car and drove away.

Not toward the highway.

Toward the old service road. The one that led to the back of the estate.

To the Carriage House.

But she saw Sabrina walking into the Carriage House with groceries.
