The Mother's Denial
Chapter 107 · ~2.8k words
The black SUVs tore away, their tires screaming against the asphalt, carrying the remnants of my marriage and the wreckage of my sister into the morning glare. I stood on the tarmac, the silence of the airfield rushing back in to fill the void of their departures. My hands were finally steady, a cold clarity settling over me that no spreadsheet could ever replicate.
I pulled my phone from my pocket. It was time to deal with the source of the rot.
I dialed Rose’s number. It rang four times—the exact amount of time she usually took to check her reflection before answering.
"Elena?" Her voice was a sharp, jagged edge. "Where have you been? Mark has been frantic. The police are at the house. They said you shot at Bella! They said you’ve completely lost your mind!"
"Mark and Bella are in federal custody, Mom," I said, my voice as level as a ledger. "They were arrested ten minutes ago for wire fraud and conspiracy. The FBI has the files from the safe. All of them."
The silence on the other end was a vacuum. I could almost hear the gears of her curated reality grinding to a halt, trying to find a way to spin the catastrophe into a narrative where she was the victim.
"Custody?" Rose finally whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of horror and indignation. "Elena, what have you done? The brand... the Vance legacy... you’ve destroyed everything! You’ve put your own sister in handcuffs over a few numbers! You’ve ruined this family!"
"The family was already ruined, Mom. You just preferred the view through the tinted glass."
"How could you be so cruel?" she shrieked, the poise finally shattering. "Bella is fragile! Mark was the only one keeping the company afloat while you played the martyr! If the business collapses, it's on your head. You’ve brought shame to your father’s name!"
I looked at the silver Gulfstream, a beautiful, empty shell sitting on the hot asphalt, and I realized I didn't care about the name anymore. I cared about the truth.
"Dad’s name was buried the day you helped Bella cover up the SoHo forgeries," I said. "You chose her lies over my loyalty for twenty years because the lies were prettier. You let Mark bleed the company dry because he called you 'Mother' and took you to lunch. You didn't protect the legacy, Rose. You pampered the parasites until there was nothing left to eat."
"I am your mother!"
"And I was your CFO. But the audit is over." I stepped toward the Audi, my shadow long and sharp against the tarmac. "The company isn't collapsing, Mom. It's being liquidated by the government to pay for the crimes you ignored."
"You're a monster," Rose spat, her voice thick with a venom that no longer had any power over me. "You’ve left me with nothing."
"No, Mom. I saved it from you."
'No, Mom. I saved it from you.'
