The Flip
Chapter 73 · ~4.7k words
The gunshot was a thunderclap that echoed across the dark water, silencing the hum of the distant city. Elena staggered back, her hand flying to her chest, not in pain, but in disbelief. The Kevlar vest under her sweater had stopped the bullet, but the impact knocked the breath out of her.
Caleb lowered the gun, his hands shaking. He hadn't aimed for her heart. He had aimed for her shoulder. A warning shot.
"You missed," Elena gasped, straightening up.
"I didn't miss," Caleb said. "I'm giving you a chance. Walk away. Leave the girl."
"You think you can just walk away?" Elena laughed, a harsh, brittle sound. "You think you can disappear? You're a genetic anomaly, Caleb. Without the booster shots, you have six months to live. Maybe less."
Caleb froze. "What are you talking about?"
"The chimera cells," Elena said, stepping closer. "They're unstable. They fight each other. That's why your father died. That's why the Senator is dying. You need the treatments. And I'm the only one who has the formula."
She pointed to Maya.
"And she's the only donor left."
Sarah watched from the truck, her heart pounding. Elena was lying. She had to be. But the doubt in Caleb's eyes was real. He lowered the gun a fraction.
"Don't listen to her," Sarah shouted, throwing open the truck door. "She's trying to manipulate you!"
"I'm trying to save him!" Elena screamed. "He's my son! Do you think I want him to die?"
"You wanted him to be a spare part!" Sarah yelled, running onto the bridge. "You never loved him. You loved the leverage."
She reached Caleb's side. "Give me the gun."
Caleb looked at her. Then at Elena. Then at Maya, who was shivering against the railing, her eyes wide with terror.
"Is it true?" Caleb asked Elena. "Am I dying?"
"Yes," Elena said. "But I can fix it. We just need to go. Now."
She reached out a hand. "Come with me, Julian. We can start over. A new life. A new name."
Caleb stared at her hand. The hand that had signed his birth certificate. The hand that had signed his death warrant.
"My name," he said softly, "is Caleb."
He raised the gun again.
"And I'd rather die free than live in your cage."
"No!" Elena shrieked.
She lunged for Maya, grabbing the girl by the hair and pulling her over the railing.
"Drop the gun or she swims!"
The water below was black, churning with the tide. A hundred-foot drop.
"Let her go!" Sarah screamed, stepping forward.
"Stay back!" Elena yelled. She was unhinged now, the mask completely gone. "I built this family! I built this fortune! I won't let you tear it down!"
"You didn't build anything," Sarah said. "You stole it."
She looked at Caleb. He was paralyzed, the gun wavering. He couldn't shoot without hitting Maya.
Sarah needed a distraction. She needed a weapon.
She had the flash drive. The one with the evidence.
"Elena!" Sarah shouted, holding up the silver drive. "I have the originals! The recordings! The DNA profiles! Everything!"
Elena’s eyes flicked to the drive.
"Give it to me," she hissed.
"Let Maya go, and it's yours."
"Throw it," Elena said. "Now."
Sarah wound up to throw.
But she didn't throw it to Elena. She threw it over the railing. Into the dark water.
"No!" Elena screamed.
For a split second, her grip on Maya loosened as she instinctively reached for the falling drive.
It was enough.
Maya twisted, biting Elena’s hand. Elena recoiled, stumbling back.
Caleb moved. He tackled Elena, slamming her into the railing. The gun skittered across the pavement.
"Run!" he shouted to Sarah. "Get Maya!"
Sarah grabbed her daughter, pulling her away from the edge.
"Mom!" Maya sobbed, burying her face in Sarah's chest.
But the fight wasn't over.
Elena was fighting like a wild animal, clawing at Caleb’s face. She wasn't trying to escape. She was trying to push him over.
"You ungrateful wretch!" she screamed.
Caleb grunted, holding her back. He was strong, but he was sick. Elena was fueled by thirty years of rage.
She got a hand around his throat. She squeezed.
"I should have terminated you in the womb," she hissed.
Caleb’s face turned purple. He clawed at her hands, his strength fading.
Sarah looked around for the gun. It was near the center line. Too far.
She saw the remote. The detonator for the bridge. It had fallen from Elena’s pocket during the struggle.
It was lying at her feet.
Sarah picked it up.
"Elena!" she shouted.
Elena looked up. She saw the remote in Sarah's hand.
Her eyes went wide.
"You wouldn't," she whispered.
"You're right," Sarah said. "I wouldn't."
She threw the remote to Caleb.
"Caleb! Catch!"
Caleb released his grip on Elena’s arms and caught the remote.
Elena lunged for him.
Caleb looked at her. He looked at the remote.
"Goodbye, Mother," he said.
He pressed the button.
