The Trust Room

Elise did not cry over the message until Theo looked away.
That made it worse. Privacy had always been the closest thing to kindness in Vivian's house.
Roslyn bagged the phone. "This may give us the sender logs."
"And the crash route," Theo said. "If location was on."
Claire stood at the study door, arms crossed tight. June was behind her, pretending not to read Elise's face.
"Mother never sent messages like that," Claire said.
"No," Elise said. "She left them where they would hurt later."
Theo's scanner chirped again near the fireplace. He knelt and ran his fingers along the stone. A narrow panel clicked open under the mantel.
Inside was a metal cash box and a stack of red folders.
Roslyn opened the first folder. The tab read CLAIRE.
Claire whispered, "Of course."
The second read ADAM. The third read ELISE. The fourth read MARTIN. The fifth read JUNE.
Vivian had built a trust room inside a study, but the locks were emotional.
Elise opened her own folder with gloved hands. It contained copies of her debts, divorce filings, Meridian reviews, and a note in Vivian's handwriting: Elise will look guilty if they make money the motive. Give her motive bigger than money.
"That is not affection," Claire said.
"No," Elise answered. "It is strategy."
June reached for her folder. Claire stopped her.
"No more secrets," June said.
Roslyn took the folder first and scanned the top page. Her expression changed.
"June," she said carefully, "this says Vivian set up a restricted account in your birth name."
"Lily," June said.
"Yes. It holds settlement money from the first disputed policy."
Claire gripped the doorframe.
Elise opened Martin's folder.
On top was a photo of Martin beside Vivian's wrecked car, taken after the crash.
In his hand was Ruby Bell's hospice bracelet.
