Martin's Exit Plan
Chapter 41 · ~2.1k words
The photo of Martin at Vivian's wreck should have ended the argument.
It did not.
Martin's lawyer called it unverifiable. Martin called it grief misread by a vindictive daughter. Roslyn called it evidence and sent it to the lab with the patience of someone building a wall one brick at a time while a rich man laughed at the weather.
Elise called it what it was.
"He was there after Vivian died," she said.
"Or before," Theo said.
They stood in Vivian's kitchen while crime techs took the study apart. The house felt less like a home with every bagged object. Elise found that honest.
Claire sat at the breakfast table with June's folder unopened in front of her. June refused to open it and refused to let Claire move it. Ruby's absence sat between them like a fourth person.
Adam arrived late, escorted by an officer because Roslyn no longer trusted him to cross a parking lot alone.
"Martin is holding a press conference," Adam said.
Elise looked up. "For what?"
"To announce he is stepping aside from foundation duties until this misunderstanding is resolved."
Claire gave a bitter laugh. "That sounds humble."
"It gets him sympathy," Theo said. "And separates him from the accounts before warrants hit."
Elise opened Vivian's MARTIN folder again. Under the crash photo was a memo titled Public Exit Plan. Vivian had predicted this too.
The memo listed three steps Martin would take if cornered: resign publicly, blame administrative staff, file guardianship or identity challenge against Elise.
All three had happened.
At the bottom Vivian had written: He will not run while the big account remains inside HartLine.
"What big account?" Roslyn asked from the doorway.
Elise flipped through the folder. "It does not say."
Theo's face changed. "Maybe it is not in Martin's folder."
He reached for June's unopened folder.
June grabbed it first. "No."
"June," Elise said gently.
June's eyes filled. "Everything I open makes me less mine."
Before anyone answered, Vivian's recovered phone lit in Roslyn's evidence bag.
An alarm label glowed on the screen:
Open June's file before Martin opens her account.
